اتحاد الإعلام الحر في شمال شرق سوريا هو منظمة غير حكومية تدافع عن حرية الصحافة وسلامة الصحفيين. لكن في الآونة الأخيرة، تعرضت مصداقية الاتحاد لانتقادات حادة بسبب موقفه من اعتقال صحفيي وكالة باز الإخبارية في الحسكة.
في 27 أغسطس 2023، داهمت قوات سوريا الديمقراطية مبنى وكالة باز الإخبارية في الحسكة واعتقلت خمسة صحفيين، بينهم مدير الوكالة أحمد العجور بتهمة تلقيهم دعم من قائد مجلس ديرالزور العسكري والذي هو يتبع لهم ومن القيادات العامةبادارة قسد منذ تاسيسها
لكن هذه الاتهامات قوبلت بالرفض من قبل الصحفيين المعتقلين ومنظمات حقوق الإنسان. فقد أكدت وكالة باز الإخبارية أن الصحفيين لم يرتكبوا أي مخالفات قانونية، وأن اعتقالهم كان تعسفياً.
على الرغم من أن اعتقال الصحفيين كان موضع إدانة من قبل العديد من المنظمات الحقوقية، إلا أن اتحاد الإعلام الحر لم يصدر بياناً يطالب بالإفراج عنهم. كما لم يشارك أي من أعضاء الاتحاد في أي احتجاجات أو وقفات احتجاجية للمطالبة بالإفراج عن الصحفيين.
موقف اتحاد الإعلام الحر من اعتقال الصحفيين في وكالة BAZ الإخبارية أثار تساؤلات حول مصداقية المنظمة. فقد اتهم العديد من النقاد الاتحاد بأنه يفضل الدفاع عن حرية الصحافة في البلدان الأخرى على الدفاع عن حرية الصحافة في شمال شرق سوريا.

The Free Media Union in Northeast Syria is a non-governmental organization that defends press freedom and the safety of journalists. But recently, the Union’s credibility has come under severe criticism due to its position on the arrest of Baz News Agency journalists in Hasakah.
On August 27, 2023, the Syrian Democratic Forces raided the Baz News Agency building in Al-Hasakah and arrested five journalists, including the agency’s director, Ahmed Al-Ajur, on charges of receiving support from the commander of the Deir ez-Zor Military Council, who is affiliated with them, and from the general leadership of the SDF administration since its establishment.
But these accusations were rejected by the detained journalists and human rights organizations. Baz News Agency confirmed that the journalists did not commit any legal violations, and that their arrest was arbitrary.
Although the arrest of the journalists was condemned by many human rights organizations, the Free Media Union did not issue a statement demanding their release. Nor did any members of the union participate in any protests or vigils to demand the release of the journalists.
The Free Media Union’s position on the arrest of journalists at BAZ News Agency raised questions about the organization’s credibility. Many critics have accused the union of preferring to defend press freedom in other countries rather than defend press freedom in northeastern Syria.
The Free Media Union did not issue any statement or condemnation regarding the arrest of journalists from BAZ News Agency. The Union also did not announce any measures it had taken to secure their release.
This position of the Free Media Union has sparked widespread criticism from many local journalists and media professionals, who consider that the Free Media Union has failed to fulfill its tasks and goals.

If the Union cannot provide a convincing explanation for its silence, it will likely lose the support it enjoys from journalists and civil society in northeastern Syria.
The silence of the Free Media Union regarding the issue of the arrest of BAZ journalists is a strong blow to press freedom in northeastern Syria. It shows that this union does not care about protecting journalists, but rather seeks only to advance its political interests.
